7 Things to Know as a Games Rookie
-
Getting official credentials, loads of free new apparel, and shoes with your name on them is fun!
-
Any training you need to do, especially before check-in, will need to be done at a local gym. Here is a link to search for CrossFit affiliates in the area.
Once you’ve checked in and have your credentials you usually are allowed to use the venue’s warmup area for your training. It may be crowded.
-
Once you are given your NOBULL competition apparel, you can put all your personal clothing back in your bag or leave it at your hotel.
NOBULL competition apparel is head-to-toe, typically including socks, swimwear, headbands, hats, wrist sweatbands, sports bras, and of course shorts and tops.
You must wear your NOBULL competition apparel at all times, not just on the competition floor. This includes check-ins, briefings, event announcements, and media interviews.
The only exceptions are shoes and performance equipment like gymnastic grips, wrist wraps, knee sleeves, and weight belts.
A potential exception: if CrossFit invites you to an athlete dinner, ask a staff member whether wearing the official NOBULL apparel is required. Often for dinners you can choose to wear whatever you prefer. In the past, athletes have occasionally worn jeans and a t-shirt.
-
You are expected to bring your own performance equipment.
Know and follow equipment guidelines. Here are the CrossFit Rulebook and the PFAA’s visual guide to accepted equipment.
Have unbranded equipment or cover logos with a piece of tape (typically the only logos that can be seen on the competition floor are NOBULL and the logo on your shoes).
Tape over logos on equipment as you pack so you don’t have to worry onsite.
-
In the warmup area, everyone’s gear starts to look the same. Many have the exact same backpack and equipment.
Add some flare or tagging to your things just like you would do with your luggage at an airport. You will be glad you did, nobody needs the stress of trying to find a snack or the right pair of shoes!
-
You may not know the extent of each day’s schedule - expect fluidity.
Most days at the CrossFit Games are long - a day can easily go from a 7am athlete briefing through a 7pm test.
Bring enough food to last an extremely long day. Have a backpack or small travel bag with snacks you can easily keep with you.
Bring more than one outfit with a range of options.
Unless all events have been fully announced for the day, bring all the potential gear you might need (shoes, lifting gear, etc.).
-
The event staff are very helpful - do not hesitate to ask them questions
T-shirt colors denote staff roles, for example, red = Medical Team and blue = Athlete Control.
